Container Exchange Points: A Smart Way to Recycle on the Go
Ever spotted a wire cage or rack attached to a public bin and wondered what it’s for?
That’s a Container Exchange Point (CEP)- a clever, community-focused way to recycle empty bottles and cans when you're out and about.
What’s a Container Exchange Point?
Picture this: you're enjoying a walk through a park, soaking up the sun at the beach, or taking a scenic stroll, only to realise you’ve got an empty drink bottle or can and no idea what to do with it. You don’t want to litter, but taking it home is a hassle.
Enter: the CEP.
These purpose-built baskets or racks, usually mounted to public bins, give you an easy alternative.
Just drop your eligible container into the Container Exchange Point instead of the bin. Someone else can collect it and redeem the 10c refund – without rummaging through rubbish.

Why Container Exchange Points matter
It’s a win-win for everyone! Container Exchange Points don’t just offer a neat place to toss your empty bottle - they help:
Keep 10c containers out of landfill
Help keep parks and beaches clean
Give others the chance to earn a bit of extra cash
Making change across Queensland
With support from local councils and Brisbane-based social enterprises, there are now over 600 Container Exchange Points installed across 13 local council areas - with more on the way!

Next time you’re out and about
Look for the basket on the bin. Drop your container in and give someone the chance to collect the refund.
That tiny gesture could help fund someone’s morning coffee, reduce plastic in our oceans, or inspire the next person to do the same. Talk about good karma.
