Do you need to remove lids before recycling through Containers for Change?
If you’ve ever wondered whether you need to take the lids off your containers before cashing them in at your local Containers for Change refund point, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common questions we receive, and the answer is changing as technology improves.
While lids may seem harmless, they can pose a serious safety risk. If a container with its lid on is processed without the right equipment, the lid can shoot off and injure a worker or customer. Only refund points equipped with the specialised machinery can safely process containers with lids on, and that’s why guidelines differ across the state.
South East Queensland – lids on!
Container refund points in South East Queensland can now accept eligible 10-cent containers with the lids on. This is possible thanks to upgraded processing technology that safely handles lids during the recycling process.
Here’s what happens after you drop off your containers at a refund point in South East Queensland:
- Containers are sorted, counted and transported to a processing facility.
- They’re then baled, weighed and prepared for accredited recyclers.
- Specialised equipment uses small spikes to pierce the containers while they’re processed to release any trapped air so the containers can be crushed safely without pressure building up.
Think of it as creating tiny escape routes for air that prevent lids from popping off at high speed, a simple but essential safety measure!
Rest of Queensland – check your depot
Outside of South East Queensland, lid requirements can vary by location. Some depots still require lids to be removed where the processing technology isn’t yet available. The best way to confirm if your local refund point accepts lids is to check with them directly before visiting.
We are currently trialling this technology in more locations, including regional and remote areas, with the goal of making 'lids on' recycling safe and convenient across all of Queensland.
