Remote animal charity celebrates major milestone
For many pet owners in the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula Area, access to veterinary care can be difficult and expensive.
In October 2026, the volunteer-run charity celebrated a remarkable milestone, reaching 3,000 animals treated and 600 desexing procedures through its scheduled veterinary clinics. The achievement is just one part of a much bigger story powered by Containers for Change.
The Thursday Island Animal Support Group has been using funds raised through Containers for Change to support animal welfare across some of the state's most remote communities.
Community members and local super collectors donate their 10c container refunds to the charity, helping fund veterinary clinics, emergency animal care and desexing programs.
The group's impact continues to grow. October marks its fifth veterinary clinic visit to Bamaga, reaching an important milestone of 500 animals treated and 100 desexing procedures in the Northern Peninsula Area.
Ozzie was rescued by the Thursday Island Animal Support Group and adopted by his foster carer.
Bringing veterinary care to remote communities
The Thursday Island Animal Support Group runs a community veterinary clinic on Thursday Island, with a veterinarian staff travelling from Cairns every two to three months to provide care.
Over two days, around 60 to 70 animals receive treatment, vaccinations, health checks and other veterinary services.
The group also responds to approximately one animal emergency each week and has become a lifeline for many pet owners who would otherwise be unable to access affordable veterinary care.
